7 Tips for Email List Building

Email marketing is a powerful tool for any business looking to establish and maintain relationships with their customers.

The first step to a successful email campaign? A healthy list of emails. While your subscriber list will grow as you generate sales, it is important for you to proactively build your list to ensure quality, quantity, and relevance.

“What matters in email marketing? What really matters in the context of your business goal and campaign objectives.” -Andrews Wharton

What is an email list?

An email list is a collection of email addresses of individuals that have subscribed via your website, social media, or any other method of choice. This list is used to send messages, newsletters, promotions, or other types of communications to a group of people who have opted-in to receive such messages.

How To Build an Email List

1.      Create and Share Valuable Content

The first step in building an email list is to create valuable content that your audience will find helpful, informative, and/or entertaining. Publishing things like blogs, videos, infographics, memes, and other forms of content that would interest your target audience can entice them to sign up for more.

2. Offer Powerful Incentives

We all know that when presented with a good discount or free gift, we’ll sign up for our favorite shop’s email list.

Encourage customers to sign up for your email list with incentives such as a free e-book, exclusive discounts, or other items of value. Not only will this entice visitors to sign up, it will give you an opportunity to build a relationship with them.

3. Leverage Data Providers

Partner with a reputable data provider to access additional datasets to further grow and enhance your list.

For example, Trigger Data sets will allow you to reach consumers going through a life event that may alter their purchase patterns.

Working with a multi-sourced data provider will also allow you to append additional alternative email addresses for your customers. For example, Jessica signed up for your newsletter two years ago, but within the last month has no longer opened your emails. This could be because Jessica is using an alternative email address that could be uncovered with AWI’s Append services!

4. Build Personalized Landing Pages

Consumers will respond to the same message differently depending on where they are in their buyer’s journey. To combat this, creating multiple landing pages with tailored messaging to different audience segments will yield better results.

5. Communicate Clearly

Ensure visitors see the value of your incentive in every available opt-in form. Be clear in the value your incentive offers, from a discount to a free download.

Experiment with the copy of your CTA, using action language like:

  • Subscribe

  • Download

  • Get My Discount

As always in all email marketing, test it out to see what performs better.

6. Add a Pop-Up Sign-Up Form on Your Homepage

Capturing email addresses from visitors to your site with a pop-up form is a highly effective form of list building to increase conversion rates.

“35% of lost visitors can be saved by exit intent offers.” -Beeketing

Pop-ups definitely work, but just make sure to maintain your list to avoid pesky junk addresses.

7. Leverage Your Social Media Pages

Your social media profiles already have a great following, why not promote your email list to this interested audience?

Encourage your followers to sign up for more content with a strong CTA in your bio or consider targeted ads to specific audiences to increase subscriptions.
